Why You Need Electrolytes on the Carnivore Diet (Unless You Enjoy Feeling Like a Zombie)
Why You Need Electrolytes on the Carnivore Diet (Unless You Enjoy Feeling Like a Zombie)
So, you’ve gone full carnivore. Steak, eggs, maybe a bit of butter—feeling primal, feeling unstoppable. Until… BAM! You wake up one day with a pounding headache, muscles tighter than your jeans before carnivore, and a fatigue so deep you consider napping on the kitchen floor. Congratulations! You’ve just met your new worst enemy: electrolyte imbalance.

But Wait, Isn’t Meat Nutrient-Dense?
Yep, it sure is. But here’s the deal: when you ditch carbs, your body dumps water like it’s spring cleaning. And guess what tags along with that water? Sodium, potassium, and magnesium. You know, the little guys responsible for keeping you hydrated, your muscles working, and your brain firing on all cylinders.
Low electrolytes = feeling like a deflated balloon.
The Big Three Electrolytes You Need
- Sodium – You’re not a carb-guzzling sugar burner anymore, so your kidneys aren’t hoarding sodium like before. You need to add salt—lots of it. Pink Himalayan, real Salt, whatever floats your steak. If your food tastes “normal,” you’re probably not salting enough.
- Potassium – Say goodbye to bananas (no one misses them anyway), but hello to potassium-rich meats like beef, salmon, and pork. You might still need a supplement, especially if your energy is tanking.
- Magnesium – This one keeps your muscles from cramping and helps you sleep like a king. You’ll find some in meat, but you might need a supplement, especially if you’re dealing with stress (or just live in the modern world).

How to Fix It (Before You Start Hating Life)
- Salt everything – No, really. Add salt to your water, your food, your coffee (yes, some people do this; I don’t however).
- Drink bone broth – Packed with sodium, potassium, and gelatin for your joints. Bonus: makes you feel fancy.
- Consider electrolyte supplements – If you’re feeling off, a little magnesium glycinate before bed and a potassium boost can work wonders.
- Stay hydrated – But don’t just chug water like a camel—make sure you’re replenishing electrolytes too.

Bottom Line
Electrolytes are non-negotiable on carnivore. Skip them, and you’ll be dragging yourself through life like a malnourished caveman. Get them right, and you’ll feel like the apex predator you were meant to be.
Now go salt your steak.
